Speed demon Lindsey Vonn looks to win her second Olympic Gold medal in two days, a feat earlier only attained by Germany’s Katja Seizinger in 1998. The Vail, Colorado native has seven podium finishes in the super-combined – including three victories – since 2006.
Vonn was one hooked gate from winning the super-combined at the 2009 Worlds. At the first World Cup super-combined event of this season, Vonn dominated the field, winning by more than one second.
American skiers have only one Olympic media in women’s combined history, a silver medal by Gretchen Fraser at the 1948 St. Moritz Games. If Vonn falls short, possible starters Julia Mancuso (USA) Squaw Valley, California, Leanne Smith (USA) of North Conway, New Hampshire, California and Kaylin Richardson (USA) of Edina, Minnesota will be looked upon to pick up the slack.
Vonn’s biggest rival in the super-combined my be Germany’s Maria Riesch – who missed the 2006 Games du to injury – she is eager to come out on top in her first Olympics.
The most decorated Alpine skier at the 2010 Olympics – male or female – is Sweden’s Anja Parson. In what could be her final season, the 28-year-old, five-time Olympic medalist could add to her collection in the event where she is the defending World Cup champion. She won the last super-combined event before the Games, in St. Moritz. She should be in the start house, even though she suffered a serious crash in the downhill.
