Recently the product was updated to fix some bugs and more recently was in beta.

WinRAR supports the packing of RAR and ZIP archives and unpacking RAR, ZIP, ZIP64, 7Z (7-Zip), CAB, ARJ, LZH (Lempel-Ziv-Huffman), TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR (Java Archive developed by Sun Microsystems) and ISO (ISO9660) archives.

This latest release fixes bugs that were revealed in the previous WinRAR 3.91 update, RARLAB has issued the following bug fixes with the final version of the WinRAR 3.92 update:

WinRAR 3.91 reported the incorrect "Unexpected end of archive" error, when opening an empty ZIP archive created with "New WinRAR ZIP archive" context menu command.

If "Delete archive" option was enabled when unpacking several ZIP archives and if one of archives was damaged, WinRAR did not delete archives after the damaged one, even if they were unpacked successfully.

If file matched two different masks in RarFiles.lst, WinRAR could select the last match. Normally, if neither of masks is a subset of another, the first match must be chosen.

If you are currently running the beta version of WinRAR 3.92 you may upgrade to the final version by visiting RARLAB’s web site and visiting their download page.

On Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 Opera Software announced the arrival of their web browser Opera 10.50 Beta. In the press release regarding the release of the beta the company touts the browser to be the fastest browser.

However, despite Opera’s claims, it seems they have a little more work to do to live up to the claim that their browser is the fastest. Stephen Shankland, Senior writer at CNET did some testing of his own and the results are in.

For his test, Shankland stated the following in regards to the browsers used for testing:

“The Opera version is the only one to sport a beta label. I called the Firefox software version 3.7a because Mozilla did, but this preview version may not actually be called 3.7 when it’s released. The Chrome version is 5.0.317.2, part of the developer-preview channel and still a relatively early branch of the new 5.0 tree. Finally, for WebKit–the foundation of Apple’s Safari–I downloaded the latest nightly build, called r54649.”

While Stephen Shankland ran his tests on a single machine – a dual-core Lenovo T61 with 3GB of memory running Windows XP SP3, different machines will produce different results.

Stephen Shankland’s article is interesting, it really sheds some light on how the browsers compare. Of course, you can run your own tests, “On my machine, though, Carakan lagged Chrome in JavaScript performance on both the SunSpider 0.9 test from the WebKit team and the V8 test from Google, named after Chrome’s JavaScript engine.” Shankland noted of the tests performed.

If you are interested to see how your browser stacks up, we encourage to run the aforementioned tests on your system.

Mozilla has been researching ways to make Firefox even faster and more stable. Today the company says it will increase the speed and stability of the browser by using multiple processes to display web pages.

This is of course no different than what Microsoft and Google have done with their browsers. Internet Explorer and Google Chrome both leverage a multi-process display system. This means that each page runs in a separate process which leads to added security and stability, because if one page goes bad, it doesn’t affect the others.

This new feature will be coming to Firefox in the future, through a project Mozilla is calling “Electrolysis”. A prototype has already been assembled featuring the “Electrolysis” project, Mozilla has outlined the benefits of the multi-process feature in a blog post:

Increased stability: if a plugin or webpage tries to use all the processor, memory, or even crashes, a process can isolate that bad behavior from the rest of the browser.

Performance: By splitting work up among multiple processes, the browser can make use of multiple processor cores available on modern desktop computers and the next generation of mobile processors. The user interface can also be more responsive because it doesn’t need to block on long-running web page activities.

Security: If the operating system can run a process with lower privileges, the browser can isolate web pages from the rest of the computer, making it harder for attackers to infect a computer.

However, getting this new functionality to Firefox won’t be an easy to accomplish, thus, the company will focus on Windows and Linux because the team is most familiar and comfortable in those environments. A Mac compatible version will come later down the road.

The details of plan have been outlined in the aforementioned blog post, but a more detailed version of the plans can be found the Mozilla wiki.
